A Personal Statement from the Founder

It's good to know where you stand.

Though we resist the truth, half of us are below average, half above. The key is: 'above' or 'below' with respect to what? My ability to draw, for instance, is far below average; to remember names only somewhat below; and to cook probably about average (my kids or fiancee might be key informants here). On the other hand, when it comes to connecting with people standing in line at the grocery, I'm above average; embarassing my kids in public: (according to them, anyway) way above average!

Yes, but what does this have to do with business? Applying this same perspective, I know what I do well and what I do really well. Having worked as an Agile coach since 2001, I do pretty well. I have seen a lot with the 40 or so teams I have coached and/or trained intensively, I have experienced many domains, many team styles, and many organizational challenges. Which brings us to organizations, and where I think I truly excel.

I have been a keen student of both organizational theory and reality since about 1976. Fancying myself as an artist of sorts, organizations are for me the great canvas....not like drawing, but rather painting on the organizational landscape, sculpting in the medium of emotional intelligence and human potential, stirring the organization cultural pot.

I earned a master's degree in psychology after doing a year of grad work in organizational behavior. The subdisciplines of organization change and culture are key for me within the field of organizational development. In these two areas I can passionately claim I am an expert. I have especially been drawn to technology-driven organizational change for 20 years or more, focused in the last 6 years on very large-scale Agile implementations in the Fortune 200. This meant training, coaching and sometimes just witnessing (from afar or up close) over 10,000 IT members in 300 or so teams struggle to adopt Agile. I have also trained extensively in leadership, leadership coaching, relationship coaching (for partnerships and teams) and facilitation. That makes me built for organizational work.

You won't be surprised to find that Collective Edge's hedgehog concept (what we can be the best in the world at) is the confluence of Organization Change + Organization Culture + Human Behavior + Leadership + Agile.

Despite the use of 'my' and 'I' here, Collective Edge has its own voice, apart from me or any of the people that work here (my vision for this is seven Principals, an Agile roundtable). At the end of the day, and in its own words, Collective Edge stands for working on the edge, the collective edge: ours, our clients', that of the collective understanding.

Please look to us for excellence - we are targeting greatness - in each of these areas. And for knowing how to help enterprises transform themselves, at least those that are ready. The Agile organization, we believe, is the wave of the future. But that may take some time, and we'd all do best being patient, enjoying the ride along the way.
